EPK research - Day 1, Special Needs & The Rocks, Punk City

An audio-visual compilation of film, music, words, images and a story by, for and about The Mique of Planet Water. (Short for the Most Unique i.e. human beings) An alternative to the usual tourism promotional videos for a land of playing class people where music has had the biggest effect on the culture.

National pastimes include dancing and partying - big time! Playing! People will always want to move their thang, so I feel that all dance music gives us a giant hope for the 21st century - it's undeerground, clubs and connections are sound and forward looking. What what about rock and roll? It’s not as constant in fads and charts alike. Well, songs that people can sing in the bath or driving a milk float, yes, I think we will always want them, and as for the frantic energy of the previous night- well actually that will always be exciting too. Just gotta have faith. Music is breaking down it's barriers, hope we can too...

There’s a never ending supply of music writers to criticise, report on and analyse music - but this research is about music as a force, a way of life, a therapy, a communal event and Nature’s communication. Besides, I lack the journalistic skills and music knowledge to criticise in an interesting and well informed manner. Instead the EPK (electronic press kit) of LaLaLand (Britain / Ireland / Channel Islands - united as per music world) will be woven over the story “Once Upon Another Time”.

Film makers, Digital Sneakers have great footage of what's going on in the 21st century punk world. They filmed Special Needs and The Rocks live in Zac’s bedroom, and at the launch of Pop Of the Tops - amongst much else. With footage in the bag and kind offers of video inclusion from some bands/labels already, I thought I would spend the very last money that I knew I would received on going to see some great bands. It was live rock n roll that inspired this initiative in the first place, after all.

The basic theme of “EPK...”(working title) is “Planet Earth - a myth?”. Watching the news you could be forgiven for thinking that the evil, scary, corrupt, fuckwitted and heartless nightmare on The News (also known as Armageddon At Ten) couldn’t be for real.The music world exists in the parallel dimension to this insanity. Doing something mad like spending money on gigs, instead of being sensible and holding on to it until I knew when my next cash was coming is still 100 times more sane than being aggressive, rude or violent like the Knuckledragger Clan of Earth who will spoil a complete strangers day for no genuine reason.

Stage 1 - London Day 1

18-May-003 : After Coronation Street a 47 bus from Rocklands to Shoreditch kicks off a night out in Catch 22 on Kingsland Road. The last Twinstar Revolution show here was ace. When I got upstairs, I’d just missed whichever band was on their last loud chords. They gathered up their cool looking selves and entourage and cleared out - should have stayed and joined the party.

Things really kicked off with The Rocks' acoustic set. The songs, stripped bare, and full of performance (vocals from wherever in the room the mike lead would reach - I think James even managed to spend a few moments on stage - the crowd were often on backing vocals! Now there’s a band too cool to bother being "cool" - their set was ace and left a big grin on the collective face of the audience.

Special Needs followed with their insistent beats and raucous melody - another band essential to the future of home grown talent, the ability to make people care and the songs to make people move. Like The Rocks, they all that in bucket loads. The place is worked up until Catch 22 is a riot of flying yelling bodies. That timeless spirit of legendary rock n roll is in the room. Digital Sneakers immortalise it. Having lit up the place like a flare everybody dissolves from the stage and dance floor into the dark of the night.

If the excitement of tonight can find a mirror of belief in that section of the business and media world which specialises in music, there is much great hope around. Are Special Needs, The Rocks and their from-outta-space following Playing Class people from Planet Water? See them play together - of course they are.
