* Coming to London to go out, or looking for somewhere to play a gig? Scroll down.
You haven't read about it in much of the media but there's been an underground pop explosion happening as home grown talent tries increasingly harder to become as brilliant as possible to stand a chance beside media darlings and big money. Most band's cant afford to take out ads to say that they exist, let alone that they are playing or releasing a single - for news like that you need to check out The Friend (network) sites, fanzines, word of mouth. The necessity for d.i.y. has become so healthy that the bands are starting to break through, new clubs and events are being launched constantly, in a city with as many musicians, music fans, venues, fanzines and websites as London, it's been pretty noticeable since the turn of the century. That it has been left alone to start becoming very healthy indeed is a blessing. Here are some great places to enjoy REAL, the new cool...

Rock/Alternative Pop/Punk peeps - Are you coming to a show in London Punk City? Where? It's a HUGE city. Perhaps gigs in different part of the city might help spread the word a bit... Check the postcode i.e. SOUTH (S), SOUTH EAST (SE), SOUTH WEST? (etc) there's no NE though, 'cos that's Newcastle. W1, WC1, EC1, NW1 (Camden) are all pretty central. Zone 1 is central london, Zone 2 inner london, etc to Zone 6 which borders on the home counties (i.e. Surrey, Kent, Middlesex, Essex, Hertfordshire, Berkshire). North of The Thames has the West End (i.e. central London, Soho etc) and most of the tube system but South London is no poor relation, it boasts The South Bank, Brixton Academy and though North London has Westminster, so what, the South has The Ministry Of Soun! It's all one city, but there are certain venues where you are more likely to get live reviews etc from, and many of them are in North London. Having said that, the South is definitely on the rise, profile wise.
The most listings for London events are in Time Out and Whats On In London though the free Metro newspaper (public transport terminals) in the mornings has quite a few. Don't just chuck flyers away either, they are essential underground pop explosion media and you might miss a fantastic night out.

Rocktastic! Just a few happening intimate places (inner and central London) to...
...play gigs, see bands and, frankly, network they have all witnessed some legendary live music and are regular hangouts for musicians, music workers and all manner of fanatics ... If you want to play small venues, they are usually looking for you to be pretty pro-active at self promotion, on top of what they will do to get people to the gig, so bring people with you and get more gigs!
