Music Tourist Board : The Story

002 - a desire to protect a successful human nature reserve (Rocklands) and benefit the local community with self sufficiency. Dismay at the distress of struggling new bands as the media moans of no future for home grown talent and record companies lay off developing them. Inspiration that the most exciting things were happening undergound and underfunded. A crazy dream was hatched. Rocklands Tourist Board was already a part of The Friend, things started December 002 really... Had already been working with an exciting new band, corporation:blend, with huge potential...

12-002: Rocklands Tourist Board ended 002 with a write up in the Lewisham Mercury newspaper and a quick interview on Goldsmiths College radio. Assisted with promoting King Adora and Ten Benson tours and teamed up with Ian at Grassroots Xchange (music support initiative). Brian at local resources centre Magpie (sadly left now), put Rocklands in touch with Paul at Greenwich's Mean-Time Radio and Ceri at Subsonique (local band, The Bridge and a Rocklands based live promotor responsible for gigs and the Pepys Festival). Local MP Joan Ruddock also put us in touch with Deptford X, (annual event that turns the area into a big gallery of galleries).

01-003: On new year's day Rocklands Tourist Board began on two different worlds. More of an Escapism Board really... believe in the mottos SHARE THE JOY, YOU CAN'T KILL THE SPIRIT, PRACTISE RANDOM KINDNESS AND SENSELESS ACTS OF BEAUTY, the power of nature and music and the magic and karma they inspire

02-003: Started collating local music contacts for Lewisham Mercury newspaper.  Corporation:Blend played London Metro (got some profile, new fans, industry interest and a fab gig offer for the following week at The Basement Club (presented by Gordon Raphael of Strokes album fame and Toby L of Rockfeedback). The show  led to new fans/industry interest and an offer to return and headline. After three weeks of existence, some kind musicians have offered a bit of financial assistance which will promote project further.

03-003: Enough of a collective to be a non-profit disorganisation with a mission. Help and advice onsetting up from NXG enterprise agency. Also lucky enough to get an early tip about Saint Rose, another locally connected band with sky-is-the-limit potential.

04-003: Declared the bohemian area of Rocklands, London South East X a rock and roll republic on a parallel dimension, then a week later launched a new local music night, Pop Of The Tops. The Paradise Music Bar was kind enough to have faith in our mad day dreams.

05-003 : Met with Lewisham Council and and gained further interest and advice, plus some contacts, from these Craetive Lewisham set up a meeting - most helpful.

06-003 : The idea of a Music Tourist Board for Britain/Ireland/Channel Islands was hatched at Pop Of The Tops (among much else). Rocklands became a promotion company (Nicci and Caffy both have music PR experience) and between the Pop Of The Tops and the growing Rockalnds collective, the Music Tourist Board will launch in Sept 003.

07-003 : London's top alternative culture exhibitor, Proud Galleries (West End and Camden) had a meeting, into using creativity as an altrnative to finance and were lovely, helpful and enthusiastic. 13 Artists, top booking agents very kindly offered office space to Rocklands Promotions/Music Tourist Board - talk about Share The Joy! Not only that, Pop Of The Tops proved itself a big hit with music friends travelling from all over to our Nut Job Central quarter of town for the rock n roll party. Rocklands Promotions is now assisting even more with promoting the music at the venue. Corporation:Blend and Saint Rose have come on in leaps and bounds since the start of the year and Rockands Promotions suddenly finds it's alternative methods pretty much in demand.

08-003 : first Music Tourist Board meeting is well attended, lively, fun and totally inspiring. Ideas are hatched and exchanged. From Oct-003 to Mar-004 alternative band developement plan. Media interest also. Greenwich Council talking to new owners of the old cinema about us getting to change the lettering. Meeting with XFM - most helpful and supportive. Rocklands Promotions move into office space with a big hug and thanks to Charlie and the gang at 13 Artists. Creative Week and Lewisham Mercury newspapers run stories on The Music Tourist Board and Sound Turns. First MTB flyers go out from Reading Fesetival weekend onwards (ta to Vince at the Mean Fiddler).
